The very first thing you should think of doing is to get yourself a really good dictionary. Then you read a lot, especially during your spare time. Practice writing a letter to yourself, or writing a simple story or essay. Have a friend or some one that you know really well who's good at English to read your paper and pay attention to why they say there is a mistake. Usually, you should really take it seriously in school on language arts, reading, and writing. You have to like doing it or you won't succeed. Always use a dictionary anytime you come across words you know.

Most writers make the mistake of following the liguistic rules too closely, and it comes off sounding stilted and forced. The language is malleable and spoken language particularly so; if you want to write in a tone that appears conversant rather than the applied rules of English (which no one actually speaks), watch a lot of television. Stick to the books if you wish to write the way a stuffy old professor would.

Don't be lazy. Always, ALWAYS use correct punctuation and spelling when typing, even though you will be slower at first.
Make sure you use capitals at the beginning of a sentence, and always with the letter "I." Lower case is never used alone.
Don't make take shortcuts and don't fall victim to teenage trends. Write as if you have to present yourself in a court of law to save your property. "ur honur, i kud not pay my bills," won't cut it with me. I'm sick and tired of high school graduates who can't spell or speak properly.
