The Spanish colonial government imposed taxes impossible to pay and they get as much properties such as land from Filipinos as payment. Thus, there were many sugar plantations owned by the Spaniards during their regime.
The Spanish friars imposed forced contributions from the people to build churches and finance the expansion of Spanish colonization in the guise of preaching.

From what I remember, Spanish priests or any significant member of the church held most of the power and had the most say in every decision. Because of this, they have turned into these vile, corrupt, political mongers. The Filipino people eventually had to rebel against them.
