Give the Kashmiris the right to vote, the Indians don't want to. No country has the right to occupy another. No soultion will ever satisfy both countries. If the Kashmiris vote, either Pakistan, or India, or both will lose territory.
The United nations should intervene and tell both of the countries to cut the bilateral crap and they should independently allow the Kashmiris to poll. Kashmir is a mainly matter of ego for both countries, and the people suffering are Kashmiris.
As far as military superiority is concerned, which is also an issue, both should demilitarize the region and until both the countries grow up and their bruised egos are healed, an international force should patrol the boundaries of the territory to fend of ill intents of either country.

Its important to understan the position of Indians and Kashmiris Here. I will not include Pakistan here because they are nobody at all. The situation is comparable to Baluchistan today in Pakistan. Baluchistanis want certain amount of autonomy and if India fuel this ambition, it might also convert to a separatist movement. But will india be justified if they do so? The answer is No but the similar oppurtunistic game has been played by Pakistan in Kashmir and that is where they get this false sense of importance here. So I rule Pakistan out completely.
Now to settle the disputes there should be a bilateral talk between Kashmiris and Indians but before that Pakistan should hand over the Illegaly occupied POK. Pak should know that they better take care of themselves before poking into India's Internal matter. Also please understand that it is not easy for any country to let a part of it go even if the people of that part are perceived to be anti-government. The situation is comparable to Punjab of 1980s and a solution should be found internaly by India by keeping the terrorist nation PAK out of it

I'm not trying to be standoffish, but when in the history of the world has there been an issue that involved a Muslim country that was resolved without said country getting exactly what it wanted? Allah and jihad are involved, so it won't ever be peaceful. You don't see the Indians yelling 'Shiva!' and then blowing themselves up. I agree with the dude above me. Let the people in Kashmir vote who they want to be under. If they choose the harsh Muslim laws over the current progressive Indian government, then they seal their own fate.

Dear Chacha Chaudry,
Let me introduce my self, I am an Indian graduate girl and i know it very well that India is on the wrong side here. according to UN the Kashmir issue must be solved according to the wishes of Kashmiri people, then why India is not ready to conduct a general referendum by UN in Kashmir. In fact India know it very well that in case of referendum India will lost. We the people of India are not able to live normal life because of the military expenses and this is because of wrong stand on Kashmir.

Join two kashmirs into a Democratic secular, tourist / ecological zone with joint forces of Pakistan and India to ensure security. Disarm all rag tag bands... Do not allow fundamentalism to rear its head. Pakistan and India must perceive that they have both gained rather than lost. It should not involve humiliation of any of the three parties. Best minds of the world must get involved to make sure this works.
People need modern education, techniques in sustainable development, ecological awareness, deconditioning from fundamentalism which has become a crutch in the present state of despondence... They need to be able to move around with dignity and gain from interaction with decent people of the world... not guns... not brutal military suppressing both sides of Kashmir... not bastard fundamentalist-terrorist organizations. We are fed up of them all.
Eliminating deeply entrenched stakes maintaining status-quo in Kashmir, will be hard... they are a part of local government, intelligence agencies, army as well as the terrorist organizations... sometimes these interests even overlap. It is presently an orgy of bloody hundreds of agencies who are competing in maiming people and destroying all sense.
Please bring wise heads from whereever you can find them to focus their minds and energies... lest this spiral and engulf whole of the subcontinent (if it hasn't already!)
