While satellite has a superior picture quality it is unreliable in turbulent weather. I believe the picture is superior due to the fact that the signal does not get split and travel through mile and miles of cable before it reaches your TV set.
Cable can also have a distorted picture during a thunderstorm (or go out completely) but....cable has another problem (at least in my area- maybe yours too). In the afternoons in the summer, cable experiences what they call 'sun outages'. Apparently, the sun affects the transmission for a few minutes every afternoon which changes time (a minute later each day) which corresponds with the earth's rotation. This puts cable down a notch as satellite TV does not experience this type of interruption.
The only thing I want to know is, how can DirecTV run an add with a guy from Florida commenting on how his satellite service wasn't interrupted at all during a recent hurricane. I lost picture on both receivers last night during a mere thunderstorm. What's up with that?
I still say satellite is better overall. And it's cheaper for me.
Have a great day!

generally speaking cable is better in quality and relaibility.

BUT depending on where you live and what company you have, the relaibility, picture quality, and how often you loose sgnal could go either way.
