Make sure the power is off to the heater, and find the inlet valve to it. Should be right above it or next to it.

If you don't power off the heater first, you will bake the thing, and perhaps cause a fire.

Depending on who installed your water system there may be no way to turn off just the hot water side . Usually there will be a valve very close to the hot water heater for this purpose. The top of your water heater will have two pipes going into it. One is cold water going in, the other is hot water coming out. Follow the cold pipe back till you find a cut-off valve. If you can't find one it's time to call a plumber, and when he installs your new hot water heater be sure to have him install a new valve too.

look at the pipes going to the water heater you should have a cut off valve on one of them if you do turn it off ! but most important if this is electric turn the power off that goes to it and if its gas make sure you turn the gas/propane,etc. for it off. once you have this done and the water going to the tank is shut off turn the hot water faucets on in the closest sink to the water tank and let it run wide open to see if it will run till it stops, this could take a little while be patience, if it stops it means you have turned off the right one. if this happens go through the house and turn on the rest of the hot water faucets to let the water drain out, you dont want that water left in your lines. let the cold water faucets run to see if they are still working. if you have cold water and everything is working except for the hot water and the power or gas has been turned off, then you are ok. now when the leak is fixed and you need to turn the water back on going into the water heater leave the power/gas off untill the tank is completely filled. you will know its filled by turning on all hot water faucets in the house. when you see/hear water running out of them let it run untill it has a steady stream coming out and its not spurting, which is caused by air trapped in the water pipes, this is called burbing the pipes. ok once the water is running steady out of all the faucets start shutting them off , the closest first to the futherest. ok, now after all that is done you can turn the power/gas back on to the water tank. but make sure you have the water at full level in the tank before doing so because if that cold water goes into the tank and you have turned it back on before the water has reached the full level its going to damage the hot water heating elements causing them to stop working and you will have to replace them. most tanks have two of them depending on the size of yours and they are not cheap. dont worry!! just follow my directions and every thing will be ok. i hope this helps you out. good luck.

Knock the braker to the hot water heater. That is the only option you have. Water will still come into the water heater unless you turn off the caps. and drain it and then replace it....
