PIII 850mhz with the O.S windows 98 first detected the HDD c and D drives. but the next day it is detecting the only C drive and disappering the D drive and the cd rom drives E and F i am a novoice and would like to to trouble shoot the detecting the drives

check for loose wires or reinstall the driver

Press little firmly (but not so strong!) your cable going to the CD rom drive and to the motherboard, and also the power wires going to your CD rom drive. Check also that if your system date/time is going back to the original, if so then replace battery.
You might consider to have separate cable for your hard disk and CD rom drive.

Go into your control panel and use the add/remove harware feature. If that doesn't work, get the make and model of your CD drive and manually find drivers on the net. I use driverguide.com for all my driver needs. You'll have to sign up for it but it's free to use.
