It is because of the process called evolution...If you know Hindu mythology well, you would have also known that there are 10 incarnations of Lord Vishnu and this is directly linked with Darwin's theory.

The first incarnation was Fish(Matsya)...and as per science , it was water which came first.
The next one was a TortoiseKoorma)..on the sea shore..

Then it was the Pig(Varaha)...A being on land..

Then it was Half-animal half man..(Narasimha)

Then a Dwarf.(Vamana).

Then a angry young man..bent on destroying one community..a kind of terrorist..(Parasurama)

Then a Human being full of virtue and a Complete Man(Rama)..

Then a clever cunning man(Krishna)..

And his alter Ego(Balarama)

And finally the destroyer..Kalki..

This is what is symbolised in Hindu mythology..

Hey do you know, that the Vedas do not support the theory of incarnation?

How can 2 persons be 1? Every individual is distinct and different. Some people say, that Lord Vishnu had 10 re-incarnations. Its not supported by the Veda. Why should GOD incarnate? Some say to understand the problems of humanity.

Why should GOD become a donkey to understand a donkey?
Why should GOD become a goat to understand a goat?
Why should GOD become a pig to understand a pig?
Why should GOD become a human to understand a human?

If you want to understand whats wrong with your computer, you dont become a computer to understand that? What do you do, you read the instruction manual. Since we have created computer, we are fully aware of it.

Therefore since GOD has created us, we must just follow his instruction manual. GOD is one. Even the Vedas confirm it.

Simply put we are split into two sides.

One consists mainly ofthe 'good' stuff, thing we like and dont mind other knowing about, our persona.

The other aspect / side is the dark stuff ( shaddow side ), all the things we do not like about ourselves.

So this representation is just a mirror of how we are as people.
