It has kept my husband and I together. Our lives fell apart after 9/11 and got even worse after that. We're still together, after job losses, financial hardships and deaths. Things are finally starting to look up 5 years later.

Yes and no. I hate giving an answer like this. But it would depend entirely on the circumstances.
By the world falling apart, could mean many things.
Financial problems being one of the major causes of breakup. When the power and water is turned off in your home and there is no food on the table, is love enough?
Strangely, some people manage to work through tough times very well while others simply run.
I find very often that the tough times bring you together but when the going gets easy, that's when the problems often start.
