Your laptop may have certain USB features disabled while it is not plugged in. Rather than transferring laptop battery energy to your iPod, it will keep the power in the battery for itself.

You may want to try editing your power settings, or try plugging the laptop in.

If that doesn't work, you may have to purchase a wall charge unit.

if you're using Windows :
1. Quit iTunes and unplug your iPod.
2. Press ctrl-alt-del to bring up task manager.
3. Look for processes tab, and select iTunesHelper.exe and iPodService.exe tasks and press End Process on the bottom right corner.
4. Re-plug your iPod

i've done the same with my iPod Shuffle...
tell me if it's working on iPod Nano
