Use the clove oil -they just go to sleep, Or freeze. Or just take a sharp knife and chop it's head off if you aren't too squeamish.

don't flush it. It is not dying in its natural environment - with all the chemicals and sludge there.

For a start i'd like to say that some people that have given there answers disgust me! I am an animal lover and believe that anything that has a little heart, lungs etc should not be made to suffer in any way. If your fish is REALLY ill than you could hit (a sort of karate chop) it where the gills are (but do it hard) and it should die quickly! My fiance is a world champion fisherman and when i have been fishing with him he kills the fish in this way.
Make sure your fish is REALLY ill and not just that you don't feel like taking care odf it. Remember its so small and helpless it depends on you don't make it suffer please!

The most humane way for killing any fish is the blunt force trauma. It's best to put it in a plastic bag with some of the water from the tank, just enough so it doesn't suffocate. Then, slam it against a table, desk, or other hard, flat surface. It'll kill it instantly, with no pain, and you can immediately dispose of it however you like.

Blunt force trauma. Put it in a paper bag and quickly smack it a few times against a wall or hard surface. The impact will immediately end the life of the fish, and it will feel no pain. As a side benefit, you will not have to look at it since it is in the bag.

OMG, blunt force? How many times will you have to hit him before he's actually dead??
Flushing down the toilet to put him out of misery?? He's not out of misery, he's out of sight out of mind, but who knows how long he'll be suffering down there before he dies in the stench.
The only humane way to euthanize a fish is by dropping him into a small container with ice water.

The best way to euthanase a goldfish at home is to put a lot of alka seltzer tablets in the water. I know it sounds weird, but the reaction releases carbon dioxide into the water, which first anaesthetises, then kills the fish.

I would recommend NOT freezing the fish. Some have said that it would be painless, but that makes no sense because when cells freeze, they're damaged, and there is some pain associated with that. I *think* its a myth that freezing is painless. Blunt force is the best way to go. Tough to do, but best.

Put it in a bowl with watter from the tank place it in the freezer. The fish will become cold and its body functions will slow the fish will go into a hibernate like sleep then freeze.

I've unfortunately had to do this before. I always put the fish in a ziplock, dump in some bleach and throw them in the freezer. The bleach kills them instantly and is mor humane than flushing them. Flushing them keeps them struggling for hrs.

The best way to put your fish out of it's misery and your anguish to rest, is send the fish to a watery grave by flushing it down the loo. I know this sounds cruel but it is the only way that way it can die in peace in what it lives in, and without you seeing it die.
Sorrry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
