It's something to do and it was not meant to be in a cage. Give it pleanty of activities such as a wheel, those cages w/ tubes, play structures, hamster balls, etc. If's it gnawing on the cage bars, its not trying to escape the cage, its keeping it teeth down so it can eat. Their teeth constantly grow, just like most rodents and lagomorphs.

Well hamsters are naturally inquisitive, so they will try and get out of anywhere. I had a hamster that would open up its doors- so I put twisties on the doors, but she untwisteed them, so I had diary locks on the doors- lol. She was in a nice sized cage- but she ended up popping the top of her sleeping area. Hamsters just want to get out and move around. I find that if you let them out a lot to run around the room, or just in their ball, they are less likely to open their cage doors. Hope this helped.

food! it's the main thing that attracts rodents. a hamster of mine escaped, and i found it the next day in the dining room, surrounded by crumbs of food.

or your cage may be too filthy for it to live in.

I guess it seen the movie "Born Free" one too many times. Don't you know that TV is bad for animals? Either that or it was mimicking Steve McQueen and the other POW's from "The Great Escape."

I second what dimples said.. It's not natural for them to be caged.. They want to go and explore the world.. Buy him/her a ball and let them walk around your house for a while.
