Nature abhors superlatives. So, we should at best select a few greats. Pele played at a different time altogether and always in a very strong team and never had to take the burden of a schemer. George Best's Scotland could never make in the final rounds of the World Cup. Maradona always represented a very weak team but he was equally successful in the WC and at club level. Just put Maradona in place of Pele in the 1962 Brazil team. Just imagine the panache they would have created. Beckenbauer excelled as a defender while forwards permanently dominate the scene and there're no statistics to prove his mettle as he didn't score goals. Had Zidane's header taken a slightly wider angle on that Sunday, he would have been condidered as the best ever player statistically. Zidane's header didn't find the net, that doesn't mean he became a slightly worse player and the difference is wafer-thin. There're so many factors to be considered that it's not objectively possible to judge the best. It's not simple arithmetic. Yet, we're human beings and we need heroes to go forward. Hence, I fancy to have a hero named M A R A D O N A.

PS : In place of Maradona I often put other greats in the 1986 Argentina team. Nah, the teams couldn't get through.

Many people will give you bs answers and mention great players who they've probably seen score 2 goals, and never ever seen them play a full game. I am only 18 years old and my in my eyes Zidane is the greatest footballer to have graced the game. Even if i was old enough to have seen greats of past generations play, would my comparison be far? No because this question is totally subjective. Greatest player could mean goals, creativity, genius or work ethic etc.., but for me It's Zidane as he captured my heart like no other player ever has, and I doubt will future.

Personally I do not think Zidane is the greatest player. Pele deserves the honour of being the best ever. He has scored more than a thousand goals in his career and led Brazil to win 2 World cups.

No, I do not feel Zidane is the greatest player to date at all! Pele (Brazil), Maradonna (Argentina), Beckenbauer(Germany), Muller(Germany), Eusebio (Portugal), Mathews (England), Platini (France), Puskas (Hungary), Cruyff (Holland), and Yashin (Soviet Union) were all better...
