Whenever a guy I don't know messages me with "I saw you on Yahoo Answers, your pic is cute," I assume he's trying to hit on me. But when I message back with "Sorry, I have a boyfriend," they always get all defensive and claim they wern't intrested in me "like that."
Do you tell random people on the internet that they're cute when you're not hoping for flirting/cyber sex/a date? Are these guys just backpedaling because they got shot down?

This is the exact text of the IM conversation that inspired this question. I changed the dude's user name.
flirty guy: hey
Girl Wonder: Hi, who's this?
flirty guy: i just saw you profile on yahoo answers
flirty guy: you're so cute
Girl Wonder: Sorry dude. I got a boyfriend. Don't date guys on the net anyway.
flirty guy: lol i never said i was gonna date you, i just wanted to chat cause you were cute
Girl Wonder: I tend to assume guys who message me because I'm cute are thinking with their penis.
flirty guy: well... would you IM someone who you think is ugly?
Girl Wonder: I IM people because I like their ideas. I don't care what they look like.
Girl Wonder: It's the internet. For all you know, that might not really be me.

And to those responding with "They need their eyes checked" or "You're not cute," Uh, thanks. Not my question. I don't need you to tell me if I fit your standard of beauty.

I automatically assume they have something sexual on thier mind since they are contacting you on the premise of a photograph. I have noticed that they get defensive if you say you have a bf or just say I am not really interested in meeting people online. I am positive it is because they are getting negative results and so they deny any ulterior motive they may have had in order not to embarass themselves this is usually proved when they dont contact you again. I dont tell anyone the are cute over the net and in fact I never ask to see thier picture, if I wanted to be friends with someone on here I would comment on thier intelligence or talk to them about a subject I have noticed they have an interest in that I also like, I hate when people say stuff like "your cute" to me because it usually leads to them saying somthing perverted after.

Well if you were ugly would you post your picture? NO, correct? so therefore you know you're pretty and you should expect comments like that on online from goons who have nothing to do. All in all who really dates someone they meet online? I have myspace and i get alot of females that try to add me and leave me messages like "hey you're a cutie", hey handsome add me" or "very nice i found a cute one".. i add them but i dont really care to have a serious conversation with them. Are you scared that your boyfriend will be jelaous about an internet goober? As long as you don't disclose vital information ragarding your daily whereabouts i think you should be fine..... It's just the internet, if they guy i an *** or a weirdo then turn your computer off or reprt him to AOL or whatever.. But really if you dont want to talk to them then just dont..

The problem with girls nowadays is they think in advance... when a guy tells a girl he thinks she's cute, it means he thinks she's cute - just appreciating your picture...PERIOD.
I am not a man, but I guess when guys would like to hit on a girl, they'd say and do more things to impress the girl other than saying that she's cute. Got me?
Yes, I tell others - if I feel like I want to appreciate their looks or their pic without the intention to ask for a date. I do have a pic in my profile and more than a dozen guys have sent me IMs/emails saying I am damn pretty/attractive/sexy... sometimes I just ignore them... sometimes I say "thank you". never thought anyone would like to ask me out on a date unless he tells me straight.
My advice is for you to wait for a man to say that he's interested in you before you react.. or else you'll end up being embarassed for pressuming that he's hitting on you.

They are backpedaling because you shot them down on the last place they felt they can get a date. And because they can't get a date in the real world and can not handle the rejection.

No one's ever told me my pic was cute...
