more people are out of the closet

Impossible to answer. In the 70's it wasn't socially acceptable to be gay. Therefore, there is no way to know exactly how many people were actually gay. I would venture however, that the human race hasn't really mentally or physically changed that much in the past 1000 years. Looking back in history, it was quite common to be homosexual and be socially accepted in places like Rome or Greece. Therefore, I would venture that the number of homosexuals are only (if at all) slightly elevated.

I would think that yes, percentage wise there are more. There is less of a stigma attached to it and more people are able to rediscover their sexuality as opposed to repressing it and living as a straight man or woman. I consider it different than just being 'in the closet', though i can guarantee you more people are out now than in the 70s.

However, i'm not sure what the situation was like about homosexuality in the 70s so i could be completely wrong.

of course millions of people have been born since the 70's, a whole generation. if 10% (lowball) of people are gay then for every 100 born you add 10 homo's. that's the factual answer. i suspect it's not what you're looking for. we're more visible now because of the gay rights movement in the late 70's so it seems to many that there are expansionary more in a short amount of time. as we've become more visible people are coming out earlier and older people are "coming out" and leaving their pretensions in the dust so we've increased being open about our lifestyles, not increased being gay.

Well there are more people on the earth, so yes. Statistically, no. About the same percentage of people are gay now as then, it's just that more people are open about it now.

I was riding in a taxicab this morning and there was a female dispatcher on the two-way radio. She was dispatching the cabs to various addresses and the usual dispatch chatter was going on. Suddenly, the dispatcher asked?... Michael Hunt, are you out there... Mike? Do you read me?... Mike Hunt, Mike Hunt... Come in, ... Come In... Come in Mike Hunt. I don't know why this is so funny to me- it was just a cab ride..
