The sky has few other options. Not enough moisture in it to be an ocean or lake. Not enough polution to be soil or dirt. Too much oxygen to be space. Sadly, sky is kind of like mother nature's uneducated natural resource. It's sky, but a proud sky and sometimes blue, but overall cheerful and appreciative of the place it occupies in the world.

There is no physical thing that 'is' the sky. You can see it, but that's just because there is oxygen in the atmosphere that makes it look blue, otherwise you would just look out into nothingness.

what??????????????????????????

and to mr. gypoi who said that the oxygen makes it look blue, the kind info. is that its not the oxygen .
the intensity of scattering of any color is inversely proportional to the fourth power of the wavelengthof the color.
since among the colors of the spectrum , blue (violet) has the least wavelength it is scattered the most and makes the sky look blue.
red is scattered least and so is used in danger signals.
