I don't believe making cars fly is technology that will be researched in the near or far future. The United States and the world has a massive network of roads that have billions of dollars invested in them and the seem to work reasonably well. Our network of roads also provides many people with jobs and flying car technology would end a need for these jobs. What is more likely is a technology that will allow a computer to drive the car to a destination using GPS and sensors placed in or along roads and in other cars.

Physically there is nothing stopping it. There are already a few 'flying cars' on the market. Most of them cost around $500,000.
The main hinderance is licensing. Flying requires a lot more effort than just driving. Look at the way people drive now, would you want half of them to have pilots licenses? The proponents of flying cars are trying to get around it by automating the process, although I can imagine this leading to some spectacular crashes when the aystems fail.

There is a "Guy" in Long Branch, New Jersey
who invented a combination car, plane and
a submarine. The US Federal Government was
very interested in it.
There have been flying cars back as far as the 30s.
1930s that is.

I think we have the technology to make it happen, but my personal theory is that the litigatory system will never let it work. See when they invented the automobile it wasn't safe at all, in fact it was quite dangerous, but people were willing to take on that risk in the name of technology. Not in this day and age though someone would get sued as soon as one of those things caused an accident. Not in America it won't happen.

within the next ten I would say, I could have sworn I saw a story about one already but I guess it hasn't happened yet, so far 30 patents have been filed already for flying vehicles so I don't see why someone would file a patent for something that is only on paper or in a design schematic, anyways hopefully soon though huh? it will mean that we will all have to get pilots licenses though
