Do some research and go ahead, but as a person who has read a lot of female self-help, I would suggest rethinking the title. I'd go for something more positive and more discreet like a subtitle.
For example:
"[ONE WORD]: 10 Steps to Overcom[ing] the Suicidal You
by
(your name)"
You see? So the actual title would read something like "FAITH by ______"
~~~
Just a thought, as a consumer.
'All the more power to you on your author adventure. ^_^
Hmm, would it sell? People would buy it, sure. However, young women and teenagers involved in a hard life probably aren't going to be the ones doing the purchasing. Those kids have a hard enough time admitting to themselves their problems, and they certainly don't want to be going into a bookstore and letting a sales associate know it. Also, if life is that hard on them, do you think they'll have the funds for it?
To really reach the audience you're hoping for, you should donate such books to schools and shelters. The folks who want everyone else to think they're suicidal (because some still think it's cool, I guess) will be more than willing to pay a high sticker cost that should allow for the donations.
Either way, best of luck to you on the book! I really do hope it reaches the people it needs to. Bless you!!
If you really have think you have the answers, only then should you do it. I had a friend who committed suicide and I wonder if a book like that would have meant anything to her. I don't mean for this to be pessimistic or putting down your idea of this book. Just make sure that you really know what you're talking about if you do this. If you do know what you're talking about then yes, it will surely sell. There are a lot of girls that need it and won't be afraid to buy it. But people can tell if they are reading junk or if it's really something that could help them get out of the mess they're in. I've been in that rut so I know how hard it is to get out of it.
I think that you should chang the title. Maybe ... : 10 steps to overcome the suicidal you. (So make it the subtitle.) I think that it will sell, self help books are in right now and many people feel suicidal at some point in their life.
Go for it. I believe it will sell if it's really good and inforamtive. Although, I would consider retitling your title: 10 Steps to Overcome the Sucidal You. I read that title and I was like, "O-kay." No offense. But you don't want to give the regular people any ideas and it may hurt the people that it's trying to help. Other than that, you're okay.
I certainly hope you're a psychologist, or the world's best counselor...
If not, you probably need to get a psychologist's help with editing out any fallacies or misconceptions you may have included. And I don't think the majority of your sales will be to book clubs or book stores, but to doctor's offices and counselors. If you market it correctly, it will sell.
