Yes, but before you get so up on blaming the US,
the name of the country is
"The United States of America"
If you were going to shorten that in regular conversation
how might you do that? The US maybe, America maybe
(as it is part of the name). "The People's Republic of China"
is referred to as "China". It's just a shortened version, don't
read so much into it.

Good Question.

Mexico is the "United States of Mexico", Mexicans
Canada has Americans they are called Canadians
Brazil has 4 Bra-zillion ( that's a big number lots of Zeros) people called Brazilians

We Americans of the USA were all once Virginians and Carolinian, etc. or just Continental colonists.
Until Patrick Henry ( You remember him, the "Give me Liberty or Give me Death" guy) well, in the first continental congress he stood up and said I am no longer a Virginian, today I am an "American".

The Title 'American' stuck.

The others on the Continent may say I am from the Americas, they may call me a Yankee.
However I say "I am an American".

B/c you're right, Americans are eveyone that you just mentioned (Hahaha) Technically...

Plus USA is so much shorter to type LOL
;-)

why do some do it, well people from the USA seem to think they are the only Americans ;-) I should know I'm an American LOL!
You should hear some of the excusses we come up with LOL!

I think it's arrogant...

You are so right. We are really U.S. citizens and should not be referred to as if we were the only Americans. As far as I'm concerned, everyone who lives in an "America" is an American.

It is very simple! People from the United-States real name just as Canadians or Mexicans are call UNITED -STATIANS but they are to lazy to use 5 syllables!

I think its because of the Monroe Doctrine...

you know... the one when Pd. Monroe proclaimed USA as the OWNER of americas...(in a few words)

Maybe its just because they called United States of America your coutry and you call "Americas" the continent

Because were the only country with the word 'America' in it. Get it? how would it sound if we were called "Unitedians" or "Stateians"? ill tell you, it would sound stupid. So that is why were called Americans.
