As one who has suffered through depression I do not mean to make light of or disregard people who have or are suffering true depression. However, it seems that today people try to seem depressed and lonely.

In response to being called an insensitive jerk I would like to clarify. I suffered from an addiction for years and after letting it control me for years I tried to kill myself. It is a miracle I am alive at the moment and that was enough to shake me out of my depression. I do know how low it can get and how terrible it is.
I do also think, however, that there are many many worse things than worrying about a low income. Having little money is something I've lived with all my life buts its far from the worst thing to happen to me if you put it in perspective of how much more we all have than half of the rest of the world and all of the millions of people who lived before us.

Yes, it's all part of the 'emo' movement.
People are dressing up like freaks, cutting, acting depressed, etc.
All a desperate cry for attention.
Then, those who really are depressed are taken lightly.
It's a shame really.

I understand as I too have been depressed in fact I believe that depression is something that almost everyone will go though at one point in their lives.
In regard to the part about being cool I think it’s more of the being different and the not being normal that people then decide that being “EMO” is cool. Though if being different is cool and to be cool you must do what others are doing to be cool then no one is truly cool but more a pack of those ants you see following the trailblazer ant that set down the sent for the other ants to follow.

I think you are very inconsiderate and stating that you had depression yourself you should know how bad it can be. It is no wonder people are depressed with the way the world is today and how poor this world is making us by raising prices, enough to depress anyone of low income's. Think next time before you type!!!!!! Insensitive Jerk!

I dont think that it has become cool to be depressed but I think that its become fashionable. Every second person talks about being depressed. Its a nice excuse for escaping life's realities and I think most of those people are sympathy seekers.
(Pls I dont mean to offend people suffering from true depression, I have been there and conquered it with the support of family, friends and my doctor and I know its very painful.)

I don't know if it's considered the "cool" thing but it sure seems to becoming an excuse for people who are just to lazy to deal with life, or get a job, or be responsible, etc. Don't get me wrong, there are people out there who are clinically depressed and need help and I wish them luck. For those who claim depression as a reason for being a slacker, GROW UP!
What is EMO?

I have suffered depression. And now days I think a person will do whatever it takes to get a med to make them feel even better. Depression has become a cop out for to many people. And it is not fair those of us who suffer with it.

It's not just recently.I think it has just expanded to adults more. It's not cool to just be sad or angry or nervous, you have to slap a blanket term on it and medicate.People who are truly depressed get grouped in with the ones that are just having a bad day and then it really becomes a mess.I've been truly depressed and then just had a case of the blues, and they seem to be treated the same.I've just learned to pay attention and try to get over it myself so I don't once again become a part of that cult-and that's almost what it seems to be.I wish people didn't think it was so great to just name something without really having a clue what it is.Did I just become obscure?Hope not.

I think people prefer to be depressed that to truly do something to not get in that vicious circle. We think is best to be depressed and let time resolve things. But life doesn't work that way ....we have to learn that their is a big world out there that has a lot of good things and people waiting for us.

It used to be the trend, to be depressed, but now it is played out. Depression is overrated. We should be angry about our government like some of our parents were in the 1960's. Our government is so screwed up that I am surprised that we are not fighting back.
