I don't want anyone coming to my door, trying to sell or teach me anything. I always thought that "no soliciting" would be the correct wordage, but I wanted to make sure, because I just looked up the word on dictionary.com & it has definitions pertaining to people trying to solicit sex & trying to persuade people for evil (or something to that context). Or is there another word I should use, to let people know to not knock @ my door, if they're trying to sell me something or preach to me about something? I don't like unexpected visitors & I've been getting a lot of them lately, knocking @ my door. I just haven't been answering it. I'd rather keep them from knocking to begin with. Thanks!

Yes. Your sign will keep ALL people away that are trying to persuade you to read, believe, do or buy anything.
The only ones that can come to your door without the risk of you suing them for violating the sign, are, the Police, Delivery men, Mail carriers, friends, family, the fire dept. a neighbor asking you to move your car because they can't pull out of their driveway or something and innocent girl scouts selling cookies because they're too young to understand the sign and too young to be prosecuted.
Someone is allowed to ring your doorbell or knock to tell you that your roof is on fire or your dog has been run over and things like that. Important things.
The sign should keep all pesky people away. They don't want to go to jail.
If they try to get you to buy something or give you a Bible or sign a petition or ANYTHING that falls under the catagory of solicitation, all you have to do is, call the police and they will be promptly arrested.
Just make sure the sign is in plain view and is EASILY seen.
Make sure you get the sign that says...No Soliciting-Violators Will Be Prosecuted.

The wording you used is correct for the purpose you want however, the majority of door to door people will tell you they are not selling anything - they just want you to hear them out or to take a look at this new product. You decide if you want "buy" what they have. So - I have found that this sign works very well - "If you have not been invited to visit DO NOT KNOCK AND DO NOT RING THE DOOR BELL. You will be immediately reported to the police as a trespasser. Thank you."

A "no soliciting" sign will keep away all respectful (which believe it or not is most) salespersons. Anyone who still tries to sell you something with that sign up, you can file a "no trespassing" order against. Which basically means, the first time they get a warning, and all following times they face a fine/jail time (ha) if they are still there when the officers show up. I actually find that once you get a trespassing order against someone it does a pretty good job at deterring them from returning, but if they do, don't think you'll actually be able to get them to go to jail. The cells are usually full of people who try to hurt themselves (junkies, drunks, etc. )
Good luck!

As one of Jehovah's Witnesses we have the responsibility to speak to everyone about the "good news" of God's Kingdom. That includes-gay people, Satan worshippers, etc... Please don't get us mixed up with the Mormons either. We don't ride bikes in the ministry. Our God is a wonderful God he gives us automobiles, with A/C & everything! ;) A sign that says- No Trespassing works the best. I'm sorry you feel this way. In the future you can't say we didn't try.Maybe some other time. Ladywolf

You chose the right word, It should keep salespeople away, I doubt it will keep religious preaching away. Perhaps you can try NO soliciting and NO unexpected visitors.

Signs are generally meaningless and carry to legal weight unless they are placed by a governmental agency backed by a specific law or ordinance.
The way that I look at it is you can choose not to answer your door - it is pretty much that simple. I routinely ignore my doorbell and telephone calls.

And a no standing and a no trespassing sign and you will have put all you can out there. Some will mess with you but most will not.

If anybody tries to teach you anything or sell you anything with that sign on your door they face criminal charges, simple as that.
