Being hard working and honest is a great start. You should also go the extra mile by being as punctual as possible, and be the "go-to guy or gal" in the office for when something needs done fast and well. Ask your boss for suggestions about what you need to do to be considered for the next higher position at your company, as long as it isn't HIS job. Ask good and relevant questions about your work, offer suggestions about how your job or someone else's at your workplace could be done faster/safer/cheaper. Become a trainer for the new people in the office. Volunteer for something extra, like training. A lot of these involve more work, but hopefully the promotion is worth it.

In order to get a promotion you need to be hard-working and honest, but you also need to make sure management knows you are those things.

Also, you need to show growth. Use opportunities to learn. Ask for more work. If they ask for someone to take charge of a project volunteer to be that person.

Develop as a leader and manager. You can only do those things by leading and managing. This is hard, but you have to win the respect of fellow workers and also show them they should follow your lead.

It's also critical that management see that you have leadership ability. Don't be afraid to tell those you work for how valuable you are to them and how much more valuable you can be.

All bosses want employees who will make their work easier. Show yours that is what you do.

Being hard working these days sometimes is just not enough. You need to stand out from the rest of your co-workers rather your "competition". Offer to assist with special projects, come in early/ stay late, become involved/interested in other departments of the company, make your name known (by good things). Be socially aware of office politics. And the best advice is to never, never involve yourself in office gossip around the watercooler.
