Everyone has the right to protect themselves. But, with that right comes responsibility. You must be able to recognize the difference between a defensible situation and outright aggression. If you are going to carry a weapon, it is your responsibility to learn how and when to use it properly. There is a great deal that each of us must learn when it comes to considering individual security. And the middle of a street brawl is not the time to learn. Too easy to make a mistake that will ruin your life: either by ending yours or by ending someone else's unjustifiably.

This is no more of 'should have' or 'should not have' matter. We have an inherent right of self-preservation. The Penal Code does not say that prevent you from exercising that right when you 'feel' that your life is threatened. Mark the word feel in inverted comma. The law does not make the impossible demand on you that you should cooly weigh all the pros and cons of the situation and if in your wisdom you feel that your life is in danger you should try to preserve it,. The law also does not lay down that you should employ the minimum deterrant, just enough to save yourselff. It appreciates that connfronted with a piquant situation there may hardly be any time to do this without the danger of exposing yoursel to mortal danger. It allows you to use your discretion and employ whatever force is necssary to face the situation, may be it may lead to killing somebody. Self preservation is a basic instinct of animals.Even a sparrow will attack a hawk which threatens her self ,her best and her children. It is only because we have this inherent right that there is some balance in the world. If the law were to fine and refine the situation it would only be a black law or rather legal injustice....

yes we should have the right to protect our own existance and of those we love. the question is in what manner. the wrong choice of protection can backfire and windup putting you in jail as the bad person. if at all posable try and talk ourself out harms way if you can't size up the least harmful way to stop the other person if you have time. a lot of times you fid yourselve in unexected trouble and have to think fast and move faster.
the Druid who answered this question also has a valid pont of view.

I truly believe there is no other option at our present place and time.
Everybody must find ways to accomplish that goal for safety's sake.
