The typical range of responses is between 100 and 5,800 with an average of 600-800. There is no official number, as everyone's saliva and licking method is different.

According to Tootsie Roll Industries, there have been several scientific or pseudo-scientific studies attempting to answer the "How Many Licks?" question, including the creation and testing of two unique "licking machines" by engineering students at Purdue University and the University of Michigan.

* A group of engineering students from Purdue University recorded that their licking machine, modeled after a human tongue, took an average of 364 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. They tried the same licking test on 20 volunteers and found that the average licks to the center were 252 licks.

* A chemical engineering doctorate student from the University of Michigan recorded that his licking machine required an average of 411 licks per Tootsie Pop.

* A group of students at Swathmore School used human lickers in a scientific experiment and determined it took an average of 144 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop.

Tootsie Fact: Students at Whittier Elementary in Waukesha, WI determined that it takes an average of 9 minutes to reach the center of a Tootsie Pop.

I don't think anyone has ever licked their entire way through a tootsie pop. My friend tried once, and she got up over 4000. But then she bit it cause it was too tempting. Lol.

Impossible to answer, although, you can a couple of experiments and count down how mant licks it take to get to the center. Then, add all the licks together and divide by the number of experiments to get a logical answer.

I have personally experimented with this and have come up with 5 differant results. It took about 725 on average. But logically, there is no true answer to that question. Each sucker is individually made and has their own densities and thicknesses. This answer can only be answered and guessed by an average.
