Im from south carolina, born and raised. (Im 28) My grandpa told me a story about him working with a black man when I was young (a co-worker had scratched his car just because he was black) He said to never judge a person based on their color, just on their worth. My mom went to high school when they intergrated the schools down south (in the 70's! if you believe it) and never had problems. I can on and on really. I have a lot of black freinds for many years, and white ones also. We all get along. My parents are republicans also (card carrying) and dont hate black people. Just because they are consevative, they dont hate black people. I just wanted to tell everyone that. Anyway thanks for answering the original question.

People think that because there's more open racists in the South, but there's just as many racists if not more in the North- they're just not usually as open about it. Funny thing- actually the most racism I've ever experienced was in Northern states, you know, the ones that claim to be the most "liberal". Mwuahaha.

Most northern people are antagonized by the sight of the confederate flag in the south. I understand completely that it means that you are simply proud of the southland, but many just see it as pride in the Confederate Army, which stands now as a representation of african-american slavery.
Now you might view this as illogical or an improbable explanation, but it is just the way it is. People have a way of misunderstanding people of different cultures, and the Northern and Southern ways of life differ in many ways.

People in the south have integrated with black people later than people in the north, they are newer at it and more likely to be racist. But you cannot judge people by where they live or anything except who they really are. People that judge people based on something like that really are no different than racists are they?

There are racists everywhere, it's not every white person, and not just in the south.
I was going to school in Wisconsin when they desegregated the schools in the 70s. I was 7.

I have wondered this as well. I grew up in Georgia and later moved to Ohio. There is FAR more racism in Ohio than I EVER saw in Georgia. I think that people in the north don't feel "guilty" for what happened and feel that since they are from the north, they are automatically "not racist," no matter what crazy things they do or say.

Hello: I think people had formed their racist opinions based on their family history and personal experience interacting with Black folks or any nationalities other than themselves. If people don't eat, pray, play, behave, believe, think, etc like us or even look somewhat like us or what attracts us we become narrow minded. It sounds like your life is fuller for the social contacts you have with Blacks and you're open to all. Good for you. i hope this answers some of the answer you're looking for.

Because most people only know about history in the South, and not the day-to-day activities of Southern people.

WELL 4 THE SAME REASON ALOT OF PEOPLE THINK ALL BLACKS ROB AND STEAL.
IGNORANCE.
BUT TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH THE HISTORY OF RACISM IN THE SOUTH IS SICKINING.
IT'S STILL HAPPENING TODAY IT'S JUST CERTAIN PEOPLE CAN'T BE AS OPEN WITH IT AS,SAY 50 YRS AGO.
AND TOO BECAUSE THERE ARE ALOT OF WHITE PEOPLE THAT ARE EXTERMELY RACIST IN THE SOUTH.
PEOPLE THINK BECAUSE SLAVERY ENDED THAT RACISM DID AS WELL.
SORRY BUT IT DIDN'T.
I'M SURE THERE ARE GOOD PEOPLE(LIKE YOURSELF)AND RACIST PEOPLE DOWN THERE.
BUT DON'T THINK THAT ALL WHITE PEOPLE IN THE SOUTH ARE NOT RACIST.
I GUESS IT'S BAD 4 THE WHITE PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT RACIST.
THE RACIST PEOPLE GIVE THE GOOD PEOPLE A BAD NAME.

I think people are stereotyping....About 10 years ago the KKK came to our little town to campaign and recruit........only three people showed up. I know because I was one of the police officers assigned to do security on the town square to prevent any violence
.
One of the Klansman went to a local business and asked to use the restroom---the business owner said "No, I don't want your kind here in my store".
What does that tell you? In a town of about 4,000 and a county of about 14,000.......only three people showed up.
No one wanted anything to do with racism.
I am proud of my little town, proud of my county and proud to be a redneck southerner. We take care of our own.....no matter what race.
