Yes, shredded newspaper is perfectly safe. There is even a bedding called Yesterdays News that uses recycled newspaper :) You may find you eventually want to mix it with aspen shavings for a bit more odor control, however.

You can, but it really depends on the hamster.
Some hamsters are sensitive to the ink used on newsprint and can get sick. But like I said,it depends on the hamster.
If the hamster doesn't seem to be feeling well, simply remove the newspaper.
Another thing you might like trying is timothy hay or kleenex. Let the hamster shred the kleenex him/herself. They enjoy doing that.
You can also give him/her a cardboard box to chew. They sometimes like to turn them into houses, but make sure to replace them from time to time if they soil them.
Hope it helps and have fun with your hamster!! : )

Bedding must be clean, nontoxic, absorbent, relatively dust-free and easy to replace. Shredded paper, wood shavings, and processed corn cob are preferred bedding materials. Cotton or shredded tissue paper (Kleenex) is suitable nesting material.

You can but I wouldn't. Rodents tend to chew a little on their food and newspaper can have harmful inks. Its safer to buy litter like Carefresh or sumthing. If you use newspaper...DO NOT....i repeat DO NOT use paper with a colored picture on it

Safer to use hay instead. I had guinea pigs and they loved hay.
