When framing a house, studs are place apart every 16 inches. The triangular marks are for making those measurments.

Most houses are framed with the studs 16 inches apart.
So when you are measuring you can line up the triangles with the center of the studs to make sure they are correctly positioned

Or if you are pounding in nails into a wall and you are not sure where the studs are, you just attach the end of the tape measure to the end of the board, (the ends are nailed to a stud) and you can see by the triangle where to put more nails, so that they go into the studs.
