I have been invited to take part in designing the layout and graphic design for someone that wants to create a website that has similar features to the ones found on the myspace website.

I'm going to charge

$18,000 for layout

$10,000 for graphic design and

$17,000 for flash animation.

Is this pricing okay because its going to be used world wide by everyone! Please help, thanks.

I hope you have one impressive portfolio.

Maybe you might want to consider a much lower price and a percentage of profits.

You could come out much better in the long run.

It all comes down to hours- A very high end graphic design and layout guy is probably $100/hour ok maybe 200/hour for one of the best in the country. That breaks down to 450 hours of work at $100/hour- Is it really going to take you 11 weeks of full time work (and since you are probably an amature you probably really can't command $100/hour). But the real answer is that you should charge whatever you can get away with (and feel good about). If they have 45K to throw at graphic design and layout then by all means go for it.

I'm sorry to stalk you a little, but only two months ago you were a novice web designer... now you want to be paid what amounts to a year's salary for a single job?

I guess if you have worked out what it would be in hourly wages for the time you will have to commit to it, and it's not something ridiculous like $100/hour... $8 - $15 per hour is reasonable for a tech job.

Also, MySpace blows.
It's totally generic, unwieldy to use, the servers are overburdened, and all that flash is nothing if not annoying.

I should hope you can do better than that.

I usually charge $1500 USD for a site that includes a professional design, 1 year hosting and domain registration, and an import of that design into any CMS they'd like (Wordpress, MT, etc). I still manage to undercut all the local companies that do this sort of stuff. Since I rely on a few friends that have various academic degrees of design, the layouts and designs are top notch, build time is minimal, and profit is maximized.

Too high pricing, I think, better be $1800, $ 1000, $ 1700
