There's so much confusion surrounding this issue.

It will be revealed in the third movie that he is looking for his father (played by Keith Richards).

The answer to your question completely depends on which point in the movie you are asking ;->
1) in the beginning (after he gets his freedom from the 'box') he uses his compass to locate the black pearl and its crew
2) then he has no direction and just sails around the ocean till he talks to boot strap bill
3) once he gets the mark, he desires to find the nearest spot of dry land - way far away from Davey Jones and his
Kracken
4) then he desires for a way to get rid of the "mark" and ends up in the witches hut
5) then he gets all confused with Elizabeth and the compass wont work right (cause hearts desire can still be just plain old desire!)
6) and lastly is the obvious, he desires the location of the dead mans chest on the island (where ultimately he needed Elizabeth to find.)
** he never actually uses the compass to find the rum though ;->
i think Jack just had a natural 'nose' for that himself

I have to go back and watch it again to see if the timing of events supports this - but I think the ring that Jack stole was interfering with the compass. The compass was going wild for Elisabeth, too, with Jack, and the ring, nearby.

I agree with the first girl except "it is me I hope"! D*** he is still a hotty even with all that make-up on!!!! ...................Anyway, back to reality.............If the answer can't be me (darn it!) then I guess it has to be the black pearl!!!
