It depends on what kind of fish they are.
Look them up in a book. Go to a library, a book store or even a petstore, ask the employees, they can show you. Books have to be fact checked while anyone can write anything on the internet.

There are both types of fish. Most lay eggs and then the male fish fertilizes the eggs.

There are at least two species though that I'm aware of that do it the "old fashioned" way and have fish babies. If this happens, you will have to get a seperate net for them, because the parents usually eat some of them...eww.

First of all you get live bearers and then you get egg layers, With the live bearers the male with swim next to the female and fertilize the eggs in her. With egg layers the male will fertilize the eggs as the female deposits the eggs in their little nest and the male and the female will takes turns fanning the eggs and turning the eggs depending on the type of fish.
Fish that give birth to live fry (babies fish) are mollies, guppies sword, platties, to name but a few. Depending on what type of fish your fatty is it normally tales about 28 days from conception to drop her fry.

All fishes bear young by eggs.
Female lays eggs & male fertilize them.
In some cases like mollies & palties, eggs are fertilized in special pouches and young ones develope in these pouches. The female gives birth to fully formed swimming fry and these fishes are known as livebearers.
Just because a fish is fat does not mean that it is pregnant.
First identify the sex of fish and breeding program will be determined according to it.
