I'm a good homebrewer and would like to be able to share my beer with people who enjoy a great microbrew. I'm looking to start small, and self distribute locally. What permits and licenses do I need to do this?

Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Brewery Planner, Second Edition: A Guide to Opening and Running Your Own Small Brewery by Brewers Publications
* Brewing Up a Business: Adventures in Entrepreneurship from the Founder of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery by Sam Calagione
* 2005-2006 North American Brewers' Resource Directory, 18th Edition Compiled by the Institute for Brewing Studies

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

This is a legal question, as well as a business question. Trust your future to the best and do what 35000 other small business owners have done to get the best and most accurate business advisers and consultants. Whether it is a one man show or a multi-location company with up to 99 employees. Take a look at my "Protect and Grow" blog on my 360 page.

Little to nothing unless you sell your brews from your bewery.
