Yes. Religion can be understood when we bring anything to it. But is the understanding to be trusted?

Religion is untrustworthy when we bring to it what we want to explain. When we bring poetique (whatever this is?) to religion then we are at risk of taking what is pure and making it reflect us. Religion is best when it changes us, to overcome the limits of our humanity.

Religious language speaks to the soul and cannot always be understood in a purely literal, prosaic way. It is often metaphorical or symbolic. You understand with your heart and mind. God is beyond our full understanding, so we use similes and poetic expressions to express our thoughts about the deity.
