You should get a calendar with a daily planner in it, to keep track of tests and homework, finals etc. Lots of pens and pencils.
It's better to buy from previous students, cause you can get them cheaper, but they go fast!! If you buy your books from the college store, you can always sell them back. You will only get about half price for them, but if you sell them yourself you'll get less than that.

You should have a computer (which you probably already have), make sure you get your student ID, and like you said back pack and basic supplies (pens, paper, notebook, etc..). The first day they will probably just introduce the class and go over the schedule so you may not need that much. If you can buy books from other students I would do it, but make sure they are the right book and edition of the book. Otherwise buy your books used from the book store if you can. Sometimes you just have to buy a new book from the book store and you can't help it. I paid 200 dollars for a chem book and resold it for 50. You should always try to resell your book back to the bookstore or other students if you don't need to keep the book!

What is an introduction to college class? Do you mean your first class of college? If so, you just need a folder for any papers, notebook paper, a pen, and a planner or some kind of date book to write down assignments and such in. The professors will tell you what you need on the first day, almost guaranteed.
DO NOT BUY TEXTBOOKS IN THE COLLEGE BOOKSTORE. Buy them:
a) online, if you know the ISBN number or title/author/edition. I saved almost $100 on one book this way.
b) in used condition from off-campus bookstores. Definitely cheaper than the campus bookstores.
c) from friends who had used them before. As long as you are sure they are the ones professors will still be using.
Or get a job in a bookstore. My friend gets a really great discount on her textbooks for working in the campus bookstore.
As an Ohio State student (aka HUGE college) I think this is the best way to go.

You'll be fine with basic supplies. Buy used books if you can, but be careful, some people highlight the wrong things.
Since you are a new student, I'll give you a piece of advice someone gave me as a new student that I really appreciated later. Save some 100 level classes for your Jr. & Sr. Year. With 300 and 500 level classes, you always have a project, big test, or something, then when you get to the last month you have all these huge things due. By saving the 100 levels for later you'll still be able to carry a full load, and not have a major project due in every class.

Just relax. For your first day, bring a good notebook and a pen. Have those in your backpack. As for your text books, as soon as you know what your classes are, go to your campus book store. All the books for your classes should be there. If you want to save money on text books (believe me, they can get super spendy, but ya need em), look for the "gently" used books. If you don't care about the money, then buy them whenever you want b/c they'll be brand new and expensive. If your profs wants you to use material that they put together themselves, they will tell you where to go to get them, ie the campus copier or other copy store or their faculty webpage to download.
Good luck and have a great first day of school! You'll have a great time!

College is pretty simple when it comes to "supplies." (Unless you are moving into the dorms and then there is a whole list of stuff you may or may not need) For classes you will need something to write with, I suggest pens (black/blue) and pencils only for math classes. A notebook with college rule paper and maybe a folder or two. I liked the five subject notebooks with the folders built in. You will need a calculator for math classes and I suggest EVERYONE have a calendar/planner to keep up with assignments and other important dates. As for textbooks, I would suggest buying your textbooks from the college bookstore; they might be a bit higher, but at least you know what you are getting. The normally offer used books a little cheaper. Feel free to buy your textbooks before classes, but wait to buy supplemental books until after you receive your class syllabus. Good luck! :)

You should buy your text books before you start school. That way you can get them cheap and not have to wait for your books if the school bookstore runs out.
Only take a pen/pencil and a note book. You bring all your supplies the second day of class, not the first.

Hold off until your first day to make sure you know the particular edition of the book to get. Used books are okay if they are not marked up to the point of being distracting. They are also good for general classes not related to your major. When you study in the area of your major, buy gently used books from the book store. Sometimes you can buy quality new or used books at amazon.com. When you do this check the ISBN number to make sure you have the correct edition. Good luck with college!

If you know what the books will be, buy them ahead of time from either students or ebay and the like. I never knew what the books for each class would be until i showed up for class, unless I went to the bookstore before class began and saw what was on the list.

Bring paper and pen for that intro class, the point of it is to learn what you need to do, etc.. Also, probably better to get the books from previous students, bargain with them, they probably are desperate at this point to sell!
