The mercedes dealership is stating that the new ML350 oil consumption is normal to add oil every 3k,4k, 5k miles driven. The oil message indicates I need to check levels and add oil. I don't think that is normal as a vehicle should never have to add oil unless the engine is burning oil or there is a leak, righ?

You don't say "How much oil your adding"
It is NOT unusual to add oil at 3-4-5k miles.
It IS unusual if you are adding 2-3 quarts/liters.
If there is a leak you will have noticed it.
Mercedes ML350 uses a low viscosity oil and will consume a small amount between oil servicing.

If it is a a large quantity, you have a problem.

To not use any oil would be unusual, My BMW 3.0 will be down a half liter when due for service at 5000 Miles.

right, vehicule should not have to add oil unless the engine is burning oil or there is a leak.
test if there is burning oil: let the car turn on 3000-4000 RPM for few seconds on Parking and let somebody check the exhaust, if there is white fume means there is oil burning
test if there is leak: open engine cover, remove the plastic cover of air supply and look at the engine, it's very easy to detect leak
by the way Mercedes is one of best cars you can ever have

it is normal for any vehicle to use anywhere from 1/2-1 quart in 3000 miles. So at 5000 miles I would say that this is normal. Maybe you should quit being so cheap and change it at 3000 miles and your engine will not require oil fills and will last much longer.

Of course it is! All vehicle should get an oil change every 3K miles or 3 months, whichever comes first. Oil get used up just like any other liquid, they do not just sit there.
