Maybe if it was unappropriated material.

Yes. Check your employee handbook. Many of them state right in there that you cannot bring reading material of any kind into the workplace (even if you only intend to look at it on your lunch break.) Regardless, if you don't have a contract, you are an "at will" employee and can be fired for no reason whatsoever.

Depends on your employment contract. If you have an "at-will" contract, they can fire you without giving you a reason.
Just having the papers on the desk isn't reason enough to fire someone, but it implies that you're reading them when you should be working. If nobody sees you reading them, or if they're just sitting there, then it's not good enough to get fired. They can counsel you and instruct you as a matter of company policy to not keep them on your desk. If you still keep them after being told not to, then you're on the hook.

It depends upon the company. Some employers reserve the right to fire an employee without notice or given reason.
Others have to have to higher ups approve.

Depends on the type and what they are doing with it. If it is a Penthouse at an office setting they could get let go but if it is a technical journal at a work setting then it is almost part of the job to have them.

A boss can do anything he wants as long as it's not immoral or illegal. It's not very smart to have newpapers and magazine at work unless they are a part of your work.

if the magazine was sexually explicit... YES
if you had regular magazines (people, woman's day...) i wouldn't think so... perhaps you intended to read them while on break... or left them in sight so as to not forget to take them home for your spouse to read...
when in doubt, call your state labor board.

I agree with Lucid secrets. Also, if she/he has been warned not to be reading at their desk and they still do not listen, that would also be grounds for dismissal...
