basically, Hezbollah is this band of terrorists. they mostly live and work out of Lebanon. Israel has had spats with them in the past. it's usually just a temporary flare up, both sides are mad and they throw a few punches.
last week, Hezbollah got brave enough to sneak into Israel and attack a military post. they killed some soldiers and took two hostage. Israel sees this as the the last straw. they are out to get rid of Hezbollah once and for all.
Hezbollah, seeing that Israel means business this time, is kicking it up themselves. they are using up all their rockets, doing anything they can to drag it out. every day they live to fight again, they count as a victory. so Israel is forced to go after them one by one, while trying to kill as few innocents as possible.

Quick synopsis: Hamas militants fired mortar and rocket rounds into Israel, killed two soldiers and kidnapped one. Israel responded by moving military back into the Gaza strip (where it had left just a year ago), taking out part of the infrastructure (power, bridges, etc) and bombing Hamas military and civilian offices. Hezbollah in Lebanon presented a second front by kidnapping two soldiers and firing rockets deep into Israel. Hezbollah is a bit more dangerous with more sophisticated artillery from Syria and Iran, their sponsors.
Israel will not stand down until the soldiers are released, and the shelling into their territory stops. Originally this was an unconditional demand for the fighting to stop, but now Israel is working a little more on working it out diplomatically.
The goal of both Hezbollah and Hamas is to trade the Israeli soldiers for prisoners that are being held by Israel. This is a tactic many militant groups have used in the past with much success, but this time, Israel is putting their foot down.

Palestinians went into israel and kidnapped some soldiers, then tried to trade them as "prisoners".
Isreael is retaliating for this, and for many countless terrorist acts by attacking the responsible parties, including the ones who aid the terrorists.
