well this is a little after i posted this question and i was looking through the answers and i have something to say, to wyser b, once you brought in 9-11, it set me off, it wasn't George Bush who brought us together it was the people, i live in new york and i have friends who have lost their parents and family to 9-11, George Bush didn't help them through, and honestly from watching the news while there was debree in the air from where i live i wass scared listening to George Bush, it scared us to hear him. He wasn't the one, it was the people, and then you say how he is religious and all the God stuff, well isn't our country suppossed to be based on the seperation of state and religon? and you say people like when someone can over come a problem such as acholhalicism...ummm he was a cocaine addict as well, and made very poor grades in yale and only got into yale because of his father.
This is why i cant figure out why people support him and like him.

People have gotten screwed by smart presidents in the past and, generally speaking, are suspicious of the "intellectual" types, mostly from the northeast. Hence, they go for plain talking guys who come across as the type that you'd trust living next door to you. I think that was the reason why Rove's strategy was so successful in getting him elected. He isn't smart and people like that. He's an ex alcoholic and we love people who have overcome obstacles in their personal lives and risen above themselves. He's religious to the point where god talks to him directly. Ey.. what more do you need.
The only thing that people haven't thought about was that if you give a dumb guy power, he'll use it to do dumb things.

Far too many (about 35% pollsters now say) see what they have been led to see by advertising, the mass media, and an incredibly successful PR campaign. They were taught that Gore and Kerry were wimpy (both served in the military, whereas George II was a draft dodger who went AWOL from his reserve duty!). They were taught that Gore and Kerry were too intellectual, had no sense of humor, and represented only eggheads; whereas George II was a good ole boy (of course, he too went to an Ivy League school supported by wealthy parents, but after all he was known mainly for his fraternity shenanigans, not his intelligence).

Karl Rove, and the other masterminds behind George II, were able to "sell" their candidate because of the support of Big Money=much of corporate America, CEOs like Ken Lay or Enron, and the greedy wealthy (which, fortunately, does not include all the CEOs nor all the wealthy). Big Money not only financed George II's campaign; they also own the mainstream media (newspapers, television, most of radio) whose reporters bought "the swift-boating" of his opponents and the white-washing of his own past and his capacity. They also had funds to "buy" the elections: the infamous 2000 recount in Florida (that never happened) and the "stealing" of votes in Ohio in 2004.

Finally, a substantial number of the 35% (though not all by any means) believed what they were led to believe by the religious right, who are in league with Big Money. They led their congregants to understand that the big issues were homosexual marriage and the need for an anti-abortion Supreme Court. However, one feels about those issues, they should not be as important, even to conservative Christians, as issues such as poverty, discrimination, health care for the needy and the elderly, corruption in government, dishonesty in business dealings, a fair working environment and minimum wage, and--above all--"peace on earth." George II admittedly knew nor cared little about foreign affairs when he was elected; his minions used 9/11 to make him look like a hero and to further their privately held agenda: to take over the oil-rich Middle East.

What do Americans see in George II? An image created by Karl Rove and company. A myth, not the reality. A good ole boy who likes to cut underbrush in Texas while Americans are suffering and dying. A macho man, who really isn't all that macho, if you look at him carefully. He swears on TV and likes to strut his stuff, but just look at him and examine his life story. He ain't no Texas cowhand. Not by any means. He's a spoiled rich kid trying to live up to (or outdo) poppa's expectations.

I don't agree with everything he does....however, I do think that he says what he feels and follows his beliefs. He isn't going to let polls determine policy. He will do what he thinks is right. I like the fact that he seems to be a man of good character. He is loyal to his wife and his country. (Something that can't be said about many presidents). He has more women and minorities in positions of power than any administration before him. He and his administration saved our economy after 9-11. He put two very intelligent, scholarly, well - respected men on the Supreme Court. I think the war in Iraq is a Noble cause.
I don't like his guest-worker idea and his tendency to want to reward illegal immigrants. I don't like that he hasn't raised the crap out of cafe' standards for cars and/or limited the sale and use of SUVs. I don't like that he hasn't put a stop to the hog-wild spending that is going on in DC.

Well, there ya' go.

I don't know how you will ever understand. I have never understood why people liked Clinton. I wouldn't allow him on my life boat if the chance arose. But, I have friends that I admire greatly who think he was great.

Just a comment about your reply to WYSER B : How is it you think you speak for all New Yorkers? I'm not a New Yorker but all Americans felt 9-11. Maybe you weren't comforted by the presidents words after 9-11 but I certainly was. I was glad we had a president who wasn't merely going to talk, but act...and act decisively. I was glad my nation was not going to remain a victim as we would have under the previous administration. The world is much more complicated than you like to believe. You people fail to see the big picture. You fail to see that we have been in a war since long before 9-11. Do you remember the '83 suicide bombing of the marine barracks ln Lebanon? The death toll was 241 American servicemen: 220 Marines, 18 Navy personnel and 3 Army soldiers. This was the deadliest single-day death toll for the United States Marine Corps since the Battle of Iwo Jima (2,500 in one day) of World War II. The attack remains the deadliest post-World War II attack on Americans overseas. You probably fail to see how Israel is in the same war right now.
Why would you choose to trust the lies of communist propagandists like michael moore over the president of the United States? That's what you have done...you've allowed all the anti-Bush, anti-American, anti-war truth distorting spin to cloud your reasoning. Despite what any of them have said, any thinking person would have little doubt about the goals and asperations of Saddam Hussein prior to the war. Saddams record speaks for itself. We had already invaded Afghanistan to rid them of the taliban and try to capture Osama Bin Laden, invading Iraq who continued to defy UN weapons inspectors made perfect sense. The goal is too attack strongholds of violent Islamic extremists and wipe them out and establish democracy where we can. Bush has taken a tough stand, and done so while receiving more criticism and probably the lowest approval ratings ever. I believe history will vindicate him. He doesn't deserve your hatred.

mank Since you've mentioned Enron:
How Enron Worked the President ... (This is an interesting bit of
information that you don't hear much about.)

A. Enron's chairman did meet with the president and the vice president in the Oval Office.

B.. Enron gave $420,000 to the president's party over three years.

C.. It donated $100,000 to the president's inauguration festivities.

D.. The Enron chairman stayed at the White House 11 times..

E.. The corporation had access to the administration at its highest
level and even enlisted the Commerce and State Departments to grease deals for it.

F.. The taxpayer-supported Export-Import Bank subsidized! Enron for more than $600 million in just one transaction.

Scandalous!!

(look below ...... )

BUT...the president under whom all this happened WASN'T George W. Bush.

SURPRISE . It was Bill Clinton!

Not all conservatives like him. But let's face it, he's the only presdient we got. We're stuck with him until next presidential election and then we may get someone who is worst or no better. Maybe we'll get Al Sharpton as president. That should make you liberals happy.

Because:
1. He is a Christian, albeit a very inexperienced one. Not much Bible knowledge, but he is saved, so it counts.
2. He's doing a better job than Gore would have, or Kerry, or McCain, or Forbes, or Dean, or Clark, or Edwards, or Bradley, or Nader, or Dole, or...
