Hmm... possibly the GameCube. The PSP is almost twice the cost, and very delicate. It's a high-end piece of technology, but doesn't have as many games that are geared towards the younger audience. I'm sure he'll like either one, but the GameCube is more user-friendly.
Personally, I like the Playstation 2. It has tons of games of all genres.
The last system you want to get him is the X Box. Very poor selection of games...

PSP. You can take it anywhere and play movies on it too. Gamecube is on the verge of becoming obsolete, although some might say that it already has.
