Please don't give me any tripe you picked up from a movie, I'm looking for Bram Stoker's intent when he wrote the book.

if you read the book, the doctor explains that the insane can sometimes sense the presence of something very evil. rienfield sensed the coming of the count, and invited him into his cell. and then rienfield became obsessed with the count.

Well from what I can gather and this is only my opinion, Bram Stoker wrote Renfield into Dracula because he could relate to him, Dracula used renfield to get into the asylum so he could continue with his activities`s of sucking the life`s blood from his victims, renfield saved the life of Mina Harker ( Dracula was obsessed with her )by getting her to keep away from the asylum, he was rewarded by Dracula with a broken neck.

He's been turned into Dracula's "minion", his watchdog; but he's gone mad, so he turns out to be more of a thorn in Drac's side...
