Monarchies are based on the idea of "divine right". In short it is the idea that God picked a person to be in a bloodline and was chosed by God himself to rule. This is how rulers can control a people and gain absolute power.

Point by point. First point: Who supposedly worships the Queen? Some people dislike her existence some like it, some couldn't care less.

Second point: Very little of her or her family's money is actually wasted, nearly all members of the Royal Family are the patrons of at least one charity, even Prince Harry at such a young age recently set up a charity.

Third point: She costs the British people an average of 2p a year, they mostly live on their old fortunes.

Fourth point: She and her family actually do quite a lot for the country both in an ambassadorial role and, internally, as spokespeople for causes etc that they believe in, so that at the same time as being moderately detached from politics they are a figurehead for such things as the environment, in particular the Prince of Wales.

Fifth and final point: Yes it is tradition, but the tradition has evolved over the centuries. She is not worshipped as you claim, but she is the head of our country and is internationally recognised and in this day and age there is not much else that stands out about Britain.

The Queen is an ambassador for this country. I would rather have her doing it that the spineless tony. Her family and all the royals we have had go back thousands of years . They have kept this little island safe. Nobody have invaded since 1066 that's 940 years . nearly three times as long as the USA has been a country.
They have been as inspiration for this country thru good times and bad. Britain managed to rule over two thirds of the planet.
The armed forces still have the Queen as the commanding chief.
She also still has the power to dissolve the government if she thinks that they are doing a really bad job. (Maybe she should look at John Prescott) .
She brings in alot of money with tourism , Her family most have jobs so make their own money as well as having to make civil duties.

As an American I doubt if you would understand , But we don't understand the way you all give movie star n musicians the hero worship that you do.

First off, you don't worship monarchs. But they do represent the history, tradition, religion and culture of England. (1200 years+).
What about the tourist trade generating income? the cost, compared with the income generated, is peanuts. The monarch, under our system, serves a practical purpose as head of state, namely, the armed forces, police etc. report to the reigning monarch. That is to prevent any sitting government with a large majority, abusing it's powers and threatening our democracy. In this regard, the Monarchy actually holds reserve powers, to suspend any government that appears to represent such a threat. You have to remember, that career politicians come and go; you need somebody who is above the dirty business of politics; somebody who can represent the heart and soul of the nation. Do you honestly think that a political replacement would be any cheaper, Presidents or whatever: History tells us differently.

Also, in England, the Royal family represents the head of the aristocracy, Dukes, Earls, Lords, etc. These people hold seats in the house of lords.

Do you see everything in terms of money? Your statement that the Queen does nothing for England, is unbelievably dogmatic; full of calculation but no emotion. Think about it, it isn't the intellect that makes people patriotic, it is the emotions. What makes you a patriotic American? When you think of America, what do you focus on? transient politicians, transient Presidents. What encapsulates your patriotism for you.

There are enough left wingers in this country who would get rid of the monarchy tomorrow, but only because they want to take that power unto themselves and abuse it. With respect, we don't need you guys from across the pond, who clearly don't understand this ancient land, joining in.

I don't know what age you are, but there is a possibility that you have been spending too much time with left wing lecturers, undergraduates or recent graduates or, perhaps, watching too much of our television, particularly the BBC. If not, I apologise, but you are still ill informed, or at least, you don't fully appreciate how our system works. Incidentaly, neither does our current government.

Unlike America, Britian has a heritage, unmatched anywhere else in the world. The Monachy is a Symbol of British "Pomp and Ceremony". Something that British people love. I hope next year to be part of it. I would like to be marching down 'The Mall' (not a shopping centre (the Road leading up to buckingham palace.)) With the Band of the ______ Guards.

All the monarchy costs the british public is 62p Per YEAR. 40cents. Not alot. The Queen is a person who helps boost morale, and spends money on loads of things that help British public (I don't know because of the Official Secrets Act). She doesn't just sit on her throne in Buckingham Palace all day long eating grapes and surrounded by millions of gold pieces. No She is outside meeting the british public.

All the ships in the Royal Navy are called HMS ______ H.M.S = Her Majesties Ship.

She is a symbol of a long line of Historical monarchs. It will be hard for the English to dismantle a tradition that is centuries old. The History of kings, queens, princesses, princes and palaces will continue for quite a while yet, especially since it has been done away with in France , Germany, Spain and all other European countries, England will want to hold on to the idea of a monarchy for ages.

First of all, no one worships the queen. They respect her, but they don't worship her.
Does she really waste the people's tax dollars? She is on a salary, just like the prime minister, and all the cabinet ministers. The taxes do not go directly to her, but to the government, who then pays her her salary. In return, she is head of state, opens and closes parliament, appoints the prime minister (after consultation with her advisors who opt, of course, for whoever was elected by the people -- but she does have the right to refuse to approve that choice and to appoint someone else) opens thousands of charity events, bequeaths honours to various people in the kingdom marking special achievements, lays God knows how many wreaths at cenotaphs, and does an enormous amount of good for the tourist trade. If you think being Queen is a sinecure, you might want to take a look at her daily schedule. Consider too, that she had four children, and raised none of them. Most days, she saw them only a tea time, when they spent 30 minutes with mummy. If mummy happened to be at home and not off in another country, another county or another township, attending yet another charity event. The rest of their time was spent with nannies, governesses, teachers, etc.etc. Not a normal situation for her, or for them.
She can't pick up her handbag and walk down the street. She can't go shopping in a mall. She can't go to the theatre by herself, or just with her husband. She can't drop in for a quick bite at a fish and chip stand. There is an endless list of things that she can't do -- things that everyone else takes for granted. I'll bet a nickle she's never been to Starbucks!
So yes, part of what she does is tradition, but much of what she does is very useful. And she earns her keep, in what she brings in in tourist dollars.

From your question, it's obvious that you do not know a great deal about the British Monarchy. The monarchy is what attracts many, many tourists to visit the UK. I've read of polls done where those who answer say that, were it not for the Royal Family, they would have no interest in visiting England. That alone brings millions of pounds into the economy each year. So to say that she does nothing for England is just wrong. Other than that, I am not going to even try to explain the part that Her Majesty plays in the life of the UK.

Thank you to those above me who took the questioner to task for his question. I am American, but my father's parents were British. I have a long standing interest in the British Royal Family and hate to see them disrespected.

The Kings and Queens of England have a long history, we are a tiny little Island compared to America and have not been conquered since the year 1066. Though many have tried. We ruled a third of the world. They are worth every penny. She is our Queen.

If we had a contest for the poorest compiled question, supposedly in the English Language, I'd give this one 10 points!
Why are you taxing your brain with a question that is clearly outside your culture and understanding? To be honest, the British are not interested if you don't understand the concept of the monarchy, its importance to our constitution and the unique role our Queen plays within that structure. Just lie down in a darkened room and think about your president

I don't think people worship the queen, and royalty in general do not rule the country in the way they used to in years gone by( we have elected governments to do that), but I do think that the queen is the ultimate public relations person for our country, who's behaviour is impeccable at all times and and example to the whole world and as such does not waste tax payers money.
