Your gopher snake isn't very likely to eat any type of fish, especially one that has been preserved in salt & oil. You'd probably have to force feed him , which is not good for a snake. If I were you , I'd skip the sea food and stick with rodents.

A canned sardine would probably not be a good meal for your gopher snake, even if he was willing to eat it. Canned sardines are very high in salt and fish are not what gopher snakes normally eat. Also your snake needs the complete nutrition that only a whole animal provides. The internal organs along with flesh, bone, blood, and skin in a whole animal are an important part of his nutrition. Also, the hair or feathers of a whole animal do not digest completely, providing "dietary fiber" to help him to defecate more easily.

Snakes do not eat dog food. If you want a live pet/snake, then think about getting one that is local, a garter or gopher snake. That way you can release him if you find it's not your thing. You can feed snakes 'frozen' mice- you have to thaw them first. Each snake needs a different enviornment, and a good enviornemnt is costly. They need the right size home, the right things to hide and hunt in, the right humidity and the right kind of light- plus each snake as a temperature range that is important. Snakes do escape. Check out Reptile sites on the web, and research. A better starter reptile might be a bearded dragon. Often a good pet of a different kind is a guinea pig or a rat.

Most snakes like to eat their food when it's alive. So if you can somehow bring the sardine to life ...go for it. Small mice might be a better choice.

All snakes require warm blood in their meal (at leats the ines I've had) a canned sardine will actually feed the snake, but it won't satisfy the snake by any means....
