What would happen if the superstringing only temporarily chose our universe, but the true vacuum lay among the millions of possible orbifolds>ould it have disastrous consequences. or doesn't it matter. We do have a twin universe, believe it or not!

I hate to break it to you, but the Universe isn't a true vacuum. There are particulates in outer space. While they are spread few an far between, they are still there, making the universe not a vacuum. And I assume you are talking about empty space, because where celestial bodies (planets, stars, etc.) are located, its definaetly not empty.

I think you have come across the term "false vaccuum" before. That's a complicated subject and even if I could (which I can't), I wouldn't trot out mathematical equations. Unfortunately, that's what you need to even discuss the concept of scalar fields, quantum jitters, and false-vaccuum energy potential. Insofar as superstring theory is concerned, in my humble opinion of course, it's all just so much theory. You can't even test the theory in a laboratory setting. At least not in this day and age. Maybe when the Supercollider comes on line in, what, 2010(?) we can learn something about our stringy universe. I am sort of leaning towards the idea that time is an illusion, it really is all happening right now, and in as many different-propertied universes as you like.

We have an "anti-universe" as I understand it... but I'm falling back (lame?) on Hawking's "Anthropic Principle." It seems to explain a lot of why we are not besought upon with the "whims 'n' spins" of the outrageous fortunes during our universe's beginning. What does M-theory say about this?

Nothing would happen except maybe the twin universe would cease to exist. Believe it or not. I choose not.

Without the "true vacuum" some people might be able to write coherently.
