I've heard eat spicy foods and get a pedicure (it's the foot massage that does it). So go to an Indian retaurant for dinner, and make your husband give you a nice long foot rub.

Nothing is actually scientifically proven to start labor although people will tell you to have sex, exercise vigorously or stimulate your nipples. Do you know how long you would have to stimulate them to actually produce contractions strong enough to get labor going? So long that your hand would fall off from sheer fatigue! We're talking hours upon hours. And even then, it's not a guarantee.

And even though the progesterone in sperm can cause mild contractions, again there is no guarantee that they are strong enough to actually initiate real labor.

Bottom line is the baby decides when he is ready to come out. If you're having lots of sex around your due date anyway and go into labor, you can contribute it to the sex, but the baby was just ready to come out.

There's no way to prove it since labor starts from the inside and coincidences are very likely when you're anywhere near your due date.

Um, hate to rain on everyone's parade, but a study came out a few weeks ago that proved that sex not only does NOT induce labor, but it can actually DELAY it. Not to say you shouldn't go at it: if you've got the interest and the ability, go crazy! Just don't do it thinking that you'll be in labor right away, because you won't.

Walking and rocking in a rocking chair are safe ways to help thin your cervix. They will only work if your body and your baby are ready.

I think the jury's still out on pressure points and foot massage.

Other than that, it is NOT SAFE to try to induce your own labor. Definitely don't take castor oil or any other "home remedies." Instead, talk to your doctor. If there is a medical reason to get things jumpstarted, he or she will induce you safely. If not, it's really best to let your baby come in his or her own sweet time.

i just had an appoinment with my midwife ande we talked about this..she told me that the best ways to start labor early is go for a walk about 30 minutes 2 times a day or how your body really feels..u can also go shopping,do a lot of cleaning in the house, elevated ur feet,do the butterfly pose, take a warm bath and stimulate ur nipples[this will also helps u if ur going to breastfeed]..i will do all of these starting today coz i also want my labor to get started!

If your doctor says it is alright you can try having sex, but my doctor told me eggplant would also get labor started. Needless to say I got a good Italian dinner out of it, and whether it was that or just nature a day later I was going to the hospital. Good Luck!

Sex is a great way and a hot bath. If you're far enough along the doctor may strip your membranes. You can try walking or the playing with your nipple thing was recommended by my doc it releases the bodies natural form of pitocin. I have also heard caster oil but that could make for a messy delivery.

if you are well over due and there is no other reason NOT to start your labor...then a lot of sex can do it...apparently, semen has something in it that can encourage over due bubs to enter the world.
castor oil is also a good one. it has been disputed if it really works, but i only know from experience and mums experience...friends experience etc ...that it always worked for them. just a couple of desert spoons should do it...but before doing ANYTHING...you should always check with your doctor and make sure what you are doing is safe for you and bub. good luck

While all of the afore mentioned 'remedies' are good and all, My Gram can sum it all in one small little phrase..

"When the apple is ready, it will fall from the tree"

In otherwords. Have all the sex, choke down all that castor oil, sip all the tea and play with your nipples all you can handle. If baby isn't ready, baby isn't ready.
