It depends upon your views with global warming. Is it possible? Most scientists would say yes. In Al Gore's new documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth," he presents pretty solid evidence that our environmental situation is nearing a disaster and environmental changes will be an inevitable result. This could include severe storms and more frequent storms. Tsunamis possible? Yes, but most likely a bit more down the road is my understanding.

New York City, in fact ALL coastal areas, are at risk from tsunamis. These are caused by geologic events, such as earthquakes or volcanic eruptions, which can cause the ocean floor to rise or fall. They can also result from massive lanslides. There is no shortage of active volcanoes & fault zones which could generate a tsunami in the Atlantic, Pacific or any ocean. A tsunami should not be confused with a storm surge, which is associated with a hurricane or tropical storm.
As far as a timetable for a tsunami, I can't say. Even scientists can't yet predict them with any degree of accuracy until some geologic event occurs to trigger one.
The best thing you can do if you live in an at-risk area is to prepare as best you can & be ready to move to higher ground, if possible, when a warning is issued. When it comes right down to it, no area is immune to some kind of disaster. So, we need to go on about our daily lives & not be ruled by fear.

SOON is a little extreme, I highly doubt it will happen soon, but I guess anything is possible. It will probably happen eventually if 1. global warming keeps at its current problematic pace and 2. if an underwater volcano erupts that is in a position for the currents it creates to ripple towards the east coast.

Don't worry about it...no one in America is immune to the possibility of natural disasters. We have to try not to worry, do everything in our power to stop it/be ready for it, and to live life for today!
