My high school counselor guidance couselor encouraged me to go to college and I am glad that I did! I am glad that you know non-college grads who have great paying jobs and own a big houses. Personally, I don't know any (unless they are lucky enough to find a government job.) Most of the people that I know who chose not to go to college go from one minium wage job to another. I am sure this is not the case with everyone, but I wouldn't chance it. Your degree could be in basket weaving and some employers won't care as long as you have that piece of paper...

Although I would definitely finish college if I could do things all over again (it's really hard to go back now), I have been very fortunate to have a great career without getting a degree. I have worked for the Federal Government for the past 26 years, and have worked my way up from being a seasonal worker to a mid-level manager. This is only my 3rd job ever--after working at McDonalds and a clothing store.

If you are willing to work hard, demonstrate that you are dependable (have good attendance), can follow the organization's rules and policies, and will do whatever it takes to get the job done, people will notice and you will move up the ladder. This is probably true for most careers, but I have been really lucky to go so far without any degrees and only some community college courses. In my organization, I am the only manager at my level with no degree. And I'm the youngest person at my level also!

At this point though, to advance any further, I need to get back to college and get my degree.

Hope this helps.

If you have the ability to go to college then do not pass it up. College is the most exciting time of most people's lives.

The single best investment you can make is in your own education. The typical earning difference between a college degree and a high school diploma is huge: several hundred thousand dollars (sometimes millions) over your lifetime.

Sure, some people get lucky and get by with a high school diploma. But home prices were a lot less 20 years ago.

Me? I have a BS in Chemisty from the University of California yet I work in Marketing for a high tech startup company in Silicon Valley. I have tons of freedom to set my own hours and I can implement the ideas that I think will work best.

There are only 3 people at my company without college degrees: the receptionist and two administrative assistants. All three are taking classes at night.

Occassionally I wonder how my high school friends who didn't go to college are managing. It's tough out there and you need every advantage. If you can do it, go to college.

I met a friend over the internet the other day. She dropped out of college and started a non-profit organization in South Africa. It certainly hasn't been easy for her but she is doing great things. So, if you have a better idea then go for it. If not, stick with plan "A" and go to college.

In terms of selecting a college, always select the best school that accepts you. Again, it is an investment in yourself. Why be cheap or easy on yourself? This is your life. Go for it!

This is what a lot of people say who hate school. The truth is, it is really hard to get a good job without a college degree these days. It didn't used to be that important but times have changed. My advice is to suck it up and get through college as quickly as possible. It is only four years of your life and you will have a degree for a lifetime that will open up a lot of job opportunities. Start at a community college while you try to find that career that you don't need an education for so if it doesn't work you haven't waisted a couple of years figuring it out. Trust me, I have had many friends that had your same idea and now they have gone back to college and are really behind.

My position is Administrative Support (I also have a janitorial position @ the same office.) I didn't go to coll but I had to prove to them that I could do the job. I'm pretty good w/ comps. I took several comp courses b/f I ever tried to get my foot in the door tho so it's better to get some type of training b/f you pursue something that may require you to have training. Lots of things that I do are things like typing, putting pkgs together, recording incoming & outgoing mail, photocopying & other things.

Things that I've done that require comp knowledge are:

retyping & formatting documents,
typing out forms,
making labels.

There are prob more things but that's what I thought of.

After hs you should go to coll/uni right away, the following Sept. Some take a yr off but then they gotta get used to going back to skewl. I heard that a good first job (I know you didn't say 1st) is working @ A&W. It all depends on what you wanna do.

Althought I didn't go to coll, I took several courses (not just courses @ the Academy of Learning for comp & Office skills) but other courses. I also plan on taking this course that my office offers to possibly help me to work as a waitress or in a restaurant one day. So no matter what the job or career is, you prob have to have training somewhere down the line. I think that I wanna be a flight attendant tho. You should research the career you wanna have. The food handing course would prob help me out some to become a flight attendant. I also speak French. I've had some experience w/ serving the public to a certain degree as well.

College is really your best route. You don't have to kill yourself. It certainly didn't kill me. The likelihood of someone being successful without a college education is not very good. Some people are exceptions. Many employers will not even hire you for entry level positions unless you have a degree.

I'm going back to get my Master's degree this fall as I want to have an opportunity to earn even more.

Good luck.

I finished High School but then got married and had kids so I have been a mom for almost 12 yrs. So my current career is Motherhood, but now I am studying to be a school bus driver in our local town. I tried college twice but had a hard enough time with high school but I do plan to give college another shot very soon.
