An instrument store gives a 10% discount to all students off the original cost of an instrument. During a back to school sale an additional 15% is taken off the discounted price. Julie, a student at the local high school, purchases a flute for $306. How much did it originally cost?

$306 / .85 / .90 = $400

The percentages get multiplied, not added. If you went into a store and something was marked down 50%, and the sign says take another 50% off, it's not free. Sorry kids, $408 is WRONG.

(1-15%) * (1-10%)

Amount paid = $306

Cost Price of school sale = 115/100*306=$351.9

its given at 10% discount
:. original Cost Price = 110/100*351.9=$387.09

10 % student discount
+15% back to school discount
--------
25% total discount
-----------------------------------------------
$306 x 25% = $76.50, this is your total discount
$306 + $76.50 = $382.50 total original cost

as for $408 being the total cost...if you check that by working back wards i doesn't work out to be $306...
$408
x10%
--------
$40.80

take that from the total and you get 367.20.
if you take 15% from that you get $55.08, which would equal $312.12 not $306.
--------------------------------------
that is if you take the additional discount separate from adding the two totals together, because if you take a store for example i work in a retail store and when they say theres a 40% discount plus an additional 20% its a total 60% all together, it isn't rang up separately.

Well, multiply 306 by 10%-that's: $30.60
multiply it by 15% - that is $45.90
----------
which equals $ 76.50

so add 306 and 76.5 and get: $382.50
