mp3shits.com
(they say that you should delete the song after 24 hours of downloading - like a test drive of the song, but they won't catch you if you don't)
epitonic.com
(not really mainstream music, but a lot of lesser known artists, and a lot of songs)
music.download.com

a lot of the band's sites will have free mp3s too.

there is no place that you can download free and legal music, unless the artist themselves have a site set-up for that.

ARES!

No spyware there :) unless you download a .mov (Apple Quicktime Video) file which may have embedded website links and other obnoxious stuff.
