Anyone with a doctorate degree can be called a doctor.

They can, but it generally considered bad form in the legal community. And any lawyer that tries to get other lawyers to call him/her doctor is likely to get laughed at.

I earned by JD last May, which is my second doctorate. I don't usually use the title in legal circles, but I sometimes do in other contexts.

Logically, it would make sense. But, it's not something that's generally done. However, I start law school next fall and certainly expect all of my friends and family to call me doctor after that. :)

Most certainly, as I am one. However, what is the reason? It's a little bit pompous! Most people who respect your title affectionately refer to me as Counselor or Atty." ", which is fine w. me.

yes, they can, because they are juris doctors, but only lawyers who have been disbarred refer to themselves as doctor. because they can no longer call themselves an attorney

No, they show their title by adding "Esquire" to the end of their name.
