If you are in the same area code for which your phone is local, you do not have to dial the area code when calling in you area.
If you are using the phone somewhere other than your local area, then you will have to dial the area code for any call.
Obviously, any time you are calling long distance, you will need to dial the area code.

YES you do need to put the area code before the phone number! When you send a text message and you hit send it is sent up to a tower to be sent to the recipient and if there is no area code it is endlessly searching and never delivered! Sorry but Dad is right this time!

It depends on the phone. most phones you do not have to enter it in, but some you do. if you have the number saved under your contacts though, you don't have to dial the number anyways.

Depends on the phone... Mine doesn't need it if you are within that specified area code... But it may just be my specific phone...
