for my husband when he goes away on business trips and can have music to listen to. Also for when I go walking with the dog.

Our music collection is on CD and vinyl. I have downloaded about 5 songs in my life.

I have read a few Q&As about ipods vs other brands but I don't know what to buy. I don't want to have to pay for a heap of downloads, I want to transfer my exisiting music and then maybe buy the occasional download.

What can you recommend? I want to spend under $100 Aussie Dollars.

I'm not worried about extra features the player may have, all I really want is a modern day "walkman"

iPod Shuffle. It costs less than $100 USD ($65 for the 512MB model) and comes in 512MB and 1GB versions. I have the 512MB version and it works great. You can download songs if you like or transfer mp3 directly from your computer to it. The 512MB model holds about 120 songs, while the other holds about 240 songs. Battery life is about 12 hours continuous and it recharges through the USB port. The only caveat is that you have to use itunes to transfer the music, as with all iPods. It's OK if you like itunes (it is a good program, after all).

If you want direct access (i.e. Windows sees the player as a hard drive), I would go with a Creative product. Next to the iPods, Creative has the best players out there and some of them don't require special programs to interface with them. Just plug it in, drag the files over to the folder and you're done.

I do not recommend the IPOD since you are paying for the name and not the product. Like you, I was pretty ignorant (and still am, sort of) about MP3 players so I went to a local electronics store and checked out which got more bang for the buck. It WAS NOT the IPOD. I ended up getting a 4GB creative NUVO which has worked out really well. I wanted simplicity and nothing of this video playing stuff and that is what I got. For 130 USD I got this unit when they wanted some 150 USD for an IPOD Shuffle that only has 512 MB capacity. Figure out what you want the unit to do and go and find a unit that does that. Then go shopping for the best price. I ended up getting mine with a 30 dollar mail in rebate so it cost me next to nothing for what it does. Good luck and have fun shopping!! Give me an email when you get it and I'll help you get it loaded. Happy hunting!!

If you don't want or need a lot of bells and whistles, buy an ipod Shuffle. There are two sizes, a 512mb that holds about 120 songs and a 1 gigabyte that holds 240 songs. It is called the shuffle because the music is downloaded randomly into the ipod then shuffled everytime you turn it on. Software is included that allows you to download songs from your CDs and organize them. In the US they run $69.00 and $99.00.

What you need is computer software that will convert your CDs into mp3 files. Most basic media players can do this. Do you have Windows Media? Check it out.

Then, once you have the MP3 files ready, you can download them onto any player of your choice.
