Complicated question. The people there have a "worst/best" view of their life. On one side they feel like they are suffering more then any other country in the world because of the embargo. While on the other hand they boast and will talk for hours about how they have such great health services, beaches, free education, and so on.
The feeling I got was that they are doing their best to deal with the life they have, but they also know that things could be better, they are curious and want to strive for a better life and yet they live in a country where everything is controlled so that their efforts are always in check and controlled.

What I am saying is that they are a very proud country that make the best of what they have and yet know that there is more out there.

I´m cuban, I left Cuba 6 month ago to stablish in mexico. I´m left leaning so I can kind of give you a centrist point of view: I left but I think it´s not bad all over. If the question goes to Cuba as whole country I may say that there is plenty of shortages and restraints. There is a complete lack of liberty to say, politically speaking, what you think when you want, where you would want to. But if you put aside the politics in the equation, and put to float the natural hability we the cubans have, and pardon my chouvinism, to struggle to survive and still spend a good time, then you may conclude YES, Cuba is a happy country. Cubans are not ignorants and simpleminded people as someone upthere write down...we do manage very well to deliver a loud laugh even through our problems...and best of all, we are always willing to share our energy and goodwill to whome may concern.

I'd say no, in the sense that they must live in poverty, since the US forbids trade with them. But yes, in that they know how to make the best of the situation. They have great music- all the time and know how to enjoy themselves. They have some of the best medical care of any nation. Cuba was dominated by the mafia, along with other corrupt US interests until a popular movement headed by Guevera and Castro overthrew them. A lot of those who were on top then, and their families, still want to be on top. But Cuba goes on, and I say, more power to them.

Well can't say if the entire country-I'm sure there are people not happy with living in a dictatorship and in a poor country but surprisingly what one reads its not all that bad considering the standard of living in the majority of South American countries. At least theres no internal war and if you keep your mouth shut(as one does in all dictatorships) and obey the laws at least safety concerns are not that pronounced, And although a poor country according to our standards most are able to make a living and support their families.I think as a whole most Cubans are happy for they work, provide for their families, make love, have children and enjoy life per the social and economic standards of their country.

Do you see any Floridian's swimming to Cuba for a better life? Or from any of the nations down that way wanting to get to Cuba? Would you be happy there? I mean, if your name wasn't Fidel that is.

No. The people you see protesting on TV against the US are told they have to protest and march or they will be thrown in jail. Free speech doesn't exist. People live with nightly blackouts and daily periods where there is no running water. Food, medicine and clothing are scarce. It is a country with people who are immature because they are never allowed to make their own decisions about anything. It is a country where people steal and cheat to survive and their divorce rate is the highest in the world. Their morals are loose because there is religion is highly frowned upon.

honestly, which country is really happy, look at the United states, half the people don't even have passports

Every country has its good and bad, including the country the world thinks as a bad place.

Peace be with you....

I truly do not know. But I would like the opportunity to see for myself.

PS. Did you know after the hurricane Katrina, Castro offered to send 100 doctors to the gulf region to help out. No answer was given.

I don't think so. If they were happy, then people wouldn't be trying to get out of the country.
